Old is new again

What with The present and Musica Surfica I'd put my money on the Alaia being the next big 'craze' to hit surfing (Again).

With it already having a cult following I have to wonder what old designs are left out there to re-explore and which might become the next big thing?

The velo spoon maybe?

We had Jacob Stuth staying in Sennen a couple of years ago, super stylish surfer and future star of "The Present' and he had a wegener alaia. We all tried it, some like me failed to enjoy it, but we were all amazed by Jacob's skill in riding these things. This is definately not stand-up paddle surfing, this is like riding a scaffold plank!!! I believe Noosa points are ideal, Sennen beach break is not!!!

Just watched Severson's Pacific Vibrations last night. It has an alaia/slidy sequence that looked fun, and with the Malloy finless sequence in Sprout, you could be right about the next trend. IT's not for me, although I wouldn't condemn it. I think the "look back to look forward" idea that's so big now is a good thing for surfing. The sport has progessed through forms so quickly starting in the late sixties that no doubt a lot of good stuff worth pursuing probably never lasted more than a season or two. Now's a chance to find those things and drill down on them a bit.

I have an alaia that was given to me with aloha by Tom Pohaku Stone of Hawaii. It's the real deal.
I'll stick it in the back of the van next time there's one of THOSE New Beach days and we can all have a go.

Alaia's and Hulls are going to get huge in the next two years. I've had the pleasure of owning and riding both and they are the real deal. Point break's are ideal since you really need to be right in the pocket. I've seen other people riding them at malibu on a regular basis.
